Oman is the trip most Dubai residents keep meaning to take and keep not taking properly. Musandam is closer than Abu Dhabi is to Ras Al Khaimah by road. Muscat is an hour by air. And Salalah does something no other place within reach of the UAE does: it turns green in August, while Dubai is unlivable.

The four Oman packages from Dubai

By road or by air?

For Musandam, drive. It is four to five hours from Dubai to Khasab via the Al Darah crossing, and the coast road along the peninsula — cliffs dropping into flat water the whole way — is one of the best drives in the region. Flying makes no sense for this leg.

For Muscat, fly. The road is five to six hours each way and the scenery through the middle stretch does not repay the time. An hour in the air leaves you two extra days on the ground for the same trip length. If you specifically want the drive, we route it via Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar and make it a two-day journey rather than a slog.

For Salalah, fly. It is over a thousand kilometres.

One practical note on border crossings: bring the vehicle's registration and insurance paperwork if you are driving your own car, and expect the crossing itself to take longer than the map suggests. When we arrange the transfer, the driver handles it.

Salalah and the khareef — why August

From late June to early September the Indian Ocean monsoon catches the Dhofar mountains and turns them green. Temperatures sit around 25 degrees. Waterfalls run. Camels stand in fog on hillsides that are bare rock for the other nine months of the year.

It is the single most counterintuitive trip available from the UAE — you fly two hours south into the Arabian peninsula to escape the heat, and it works. This is also why Salalah is the one Oman itinerary that genuinely needs booking months ahead: Gulf families have known about khareef for a long time.

How much is an Oman tour from Dubai?

From about AED 1,450 per person for the Musandam dhow day by road, up to roughly AED 6,900 for five nights in Salalah with flights during khareef.

Is Musandam worth doing as a day trip?

Yes — it is the one Oman itinerary that genuinely works in a day from Dubai. You will be tired. You will also have been in a fjord.

Do UAE residents need an Oman visa?

It depends on passport nationality and residence status, and the rules have changed more than once recently. We confirm the current position for each traveller before booking instead of relying on last season's answer.

Can we combine Muscat and Salalah?

Yes, and in khareef it is the better trip — four nights Muscat, then the internal flight south for four more. Ask and we will price it as one itinerary.
