Baku is the short-haul trip Dubai residents consistently underestimate. Three hours gets you a walled medieval old city, Zaha Hadid's best building, oil-boom mansions, and a Caspian seafront — in a country where the food is excellent and almost nobody from the UAE has been. It is also markedly cheaper than the equivalent European city break.

Sample itinerary — the five-night shape

Day 1 · Afternoon flight from Dubai, private transfer, evening walk on the boulevard.

Day 2 · Icherisheher on foot — the Maiden Tower, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, and the caravanserais — then the Carpet Museum.

Day 3 · Heydar Aliyev Centre in the morning light, oil-boom mansions in the afternoon, dinner in the old city.

Day 4 · Full day south: Gobustan petroglyphs, the mud volcanoes, and the Ateshgah fire temple on the way back.

Day 5 · Absheron peninsula and Yanar Dag, or a free day for the Caspian beach clubs in summer.

Day 6 · Morning at leisure, afternoon flight back to Dubai.

What's included — and what isn't

Where you'll stay

The old city and Fountains Square put you inside walking distance of almost everything worth seeing, which in a compact city like Baku matters more than the hotel does.

The boulevard and Flame Towers side gives you the Caspian view and the newer luxury inventory — the right choice if a view and a spa rank above a five-minute walk to the Maiden Tower.

In Gabala or Sheki, the mountain properties are simpler than Baku's. You go for the caravanserai, the walnut forests and the drive, not the thread count.

When to go from the UAE

April to June and September to October. Baku is a windy city and those shoulder months give you the best of it — comfortable walking weather and the Caspian still warm enough in September.

July and August are hot but the beach clubs north of the city run properly, which suits a family trip. Winter is cold and grey, and worth it only if you specifically want an empty old city.

Two dates to check before booking: the Formula 1 weekend, when the city centre is a circuit and rates multiply, and Novruz in March, when the country shuts down to celebrate.

How much is a Baku package from Dubai?

From about AED 4,200 per person twin-share for three nights with flights, AED 6,800 for five nights adding Gobustan and the Absheron peninsula, and AED 9,400 for six nights including two in the Caucasus mountains. Indicative, and quoted firm against your dates.

How long is the flight from Dubai to Baku?

Roughly three hours direct. It is one of the shortest international trips available from the UAE and works well as a long weekend, which is how most of our clients take it.

Do UAE residents need a visa for Azerbaijan?

Most nationalities need an Azerbaijani e-visa, which is straightforward and issued online. We handle the application as part of the package rather than leaving it to you.

Is Baku worth visiting for three nights?

Yes — the city is compact and three nights covers the old city, the Heydar Aliyev Centre and the boulevard without rushing. Five nights is better if you want Gobustan and the mud volcanoes, which are a full day out.

Is Azerbaijan expensive compared with Europe?

No, and that is much of the appeal. Hotels, dining and private guiding all cost meaningfully less than the equivalent European city break, which is why the three-night trip lands near AED 4,200 rather than double that.
