The Joseon dynasty's main seat Map. Bukchon Hanok Village

Six hundred years of aristocratic rooftops between two palaces. Before 8am or after 6pm, in respectful quiet — it is a living neighbourhood with posted silence hours, not a set. The upper viewing lanes give the tiled-roof panorama the city puts on its posters.

N Seoul Tower and Namsan

Go for the mountain, not the tower queue: the dusk cable car, the ramparts walk, the city turning itself on. The tower's observatory adds little that the terrace hasn't already given you free.

The Han River parks

Mingles — three stars

Chef Kang Mingoo builds modern Korean cuisine on jang — the fermented sauces — grain and season; the doenjang-aged short rib and the makgeolli dessert course are the signatures. Reservations open about a month out on Catch Table and vanish within hours; we watch the window so you don't have to.

La Yeon — two stars

Hanwoo, properly

Korea's native beef outranks most wagyu in the marbling it never exports. Book a private room at a top Gangnam hanwoo house, order the butcher's selection cut by cut, and let the grill master work — you are paying for his tongs as much as the beef. The soju is mandatory; the hangover, optional.

The markets
