Phuket runs two economies on one island: the package-holiday machine of Patong, and a north-west coast of headland estates and pool villas where Aman built its first resort and never needed to advertise. Six direct hours from Dubai, the second Phuket is Asia's most accessible serious beach destination — provided you land on the right coast. Our Phuket desk exists to keep clients there.

What is Phuket really like for the discerning traveller?

Phuket is Thailand's largest island and behaves like a small country: an airport with direct wide-bodies from three continents, a mountainous jungle spine, and a west coast of a dozen distinct beaches each with its own economy. The travel decision is coastal: the north-west — Bang Tao, Layan, Pansea, Nai Thon — holds the estates and the calm; the central-west holds Patong's neon, which you may cheerfully ignore for a week.

The island's texture surprises first-timers who expect a resort monoculture. Phuket grew rich on tin a century before tourism, and its old town is a grid of Sino-Portuguese shophouses in gelato colours, built by Hokkien merchants and now housing the island's best coffee. Rubber plantations still line the interior roads. The smell of the island is rain on hot asphalt, frangipani and fish grilling somewhere.

Who suits it? Families, exceptionally — villas absorb three generations, the sea is warm and staff adore children. Couples who want Aman-grade privacy with a real island around it. Long-stayers: Phuket's international schools, hospitals and fibre have quietly made it Asia's leading remote-work beach base. Who doesn't: those wanting an undiscovered island. Choose the right coast instead.

November to April is the season — dry, calm Andaman water, sunsets on schedule. The May-to-October monsoon brings afternoon theatre and red-flag swimming days, but also green hills, half-price villas and the best surf at Kata. We book both, for different clients.

What are the great adventures around Phuket?

The bay, above all. Phang Nga's drowned karst landscape is one of Asia's natural wonders, and access is a solved problem if you charter privately and time it against the crowds.

Hundreds of limestone towers rise from the bay's jade water Map, most uninhabited, many hiding hongs — collapsed sea-caves entered by kayak through cliff tunnels at the right tide. A private motoryacht from the east-coast marinas beats every speedboat tour: leave by eight, take the famous James Bond islet Map before ten, then spend the afternoon anchored where the flotillas don't go. Sunset among the karsts is the island's best hour.

The southern islands

Phi Phi's cliffs and Maya Bay Map deserve their fame and punish bad timing — go at opening or not at all. Racha and Coral islands, forty minutes south, offer clearer water with a tenth of the boats. Divers push to the Similans in season, among the Indian Ocean's finest sites.

Above the water line

The interior hides proper jungle: waterfall hikes in Khao Phra Thaeo reserve, dawn treks up to the Big Buddha ridge, and ethical elephant sanctuaries — we vet these carefully; several trade on the word without the practice. Ask us for the shortlist.

How should you spend your days in Phuket?

On villa time: sea mornings, shaded noons, golden-hour outings. The island's distances are longer than maps suggest — cross-island errands eat an hour — so build days around one anchor event and let the villa absorb the rest.

For couples: a Phang Nga charter day, a spa afternoon — Thai therapists remain the world's benchmark — sunset at a Bang Tao beach club, and one dinner at PRU. Add a dawn hour at an empty Nai Thon or Layan beach Map; the north-west coast before eight belongs to herons.

For families: villa pool as home base, the island-hopping day with snorkelling stops, elephant sanctuary morning, and the old town's shophouse ice-cream crawl. Teenagers rate the surf schools at Kata in green season; younger children rate the resort kids' clubs, which here are genuinely excellent.

Where should you stay in Phuket?

North-west coast, almost without exception. One 2026 note first: Amanpuri, the island's founding luxury address, closed on 15 May 2026 for a season of enhancements and reopens 14 September 2026 — plan around it or book its reopening weeks, which will be the island's hottest ticket.

Banyan Tree Phuket — Refined

The all-pool-villa estate at the heart of Laguna Map, with its lagoon setting, golf and the group's signature spa. The dependable first-tier entry, strong for families wanting infrastructure around the villa.

Rosewood Phuket — Luxury

Stretching along Emerald Bay near Patong's southern headland Map — contemporary pavilions and pool villas stepping down jungled slopes to a private beach, with the brand's residential polish. The design-minded choice.

Trisara — Ultra

Phuket's definitive private-pool resort Map: villas and residences terraced above a private bay on the north-west coast, every one with its own pool facing the Andaman, and PRU's Michelin star at the top of the drive. For multi-family stays, the multi-bedroom residences with private chefs are the island's best-kept arrangement.

Amanpuri — Ultra (reopens 14 Sep 2026)

Aman's 1988 original on its Pansea Beach headland Map (official site) — the pavilion-and-villa blueprint every Asian resort since has quoted. Closed for enhancement works 15 May–13 September 2026; the reopening season is the booking to make now. Pavilions historically from around US$800–1,200 nightly, pool villas well above US$2,000 in peak.

Which iconic spots deserve your time — and how do insiders see them?

Three icons and one town, each with a timing rule.

Old Phuket Town

The Sino-Portuguese grid around Thalang and Soi Romanee Map is the island's soul: pastel shophouses, ancestral shrines, third-generation coffee roasters. Go before nine for empty streets and cool light, or on a Sunday evening when Thalang Road becomes a walking market. Noon is for elsewhere.

The Big Buddha

The 45-metre white-marble Buddha on Nakkerd Hill Map surveys the whole south of the island. Sunrise is the insider slot — gates open early, the sea haze glows, and the coach parks are empty. Shoulders covered; the dress code is enforced and rightly so.

Phang Nga and Maya Bay

Covered above under adventures — the rule bears repeating: private boat, early start, famous sights before ten, empty anchorages after. The difference between the photograph and the memory is entirely scheduling.

The sunset beaches

Every west-coast beach faces the set. The connoisseur's pick is Nai Thon — a kilometre of sand with no scene at all — followed by dinner ten minutes south where the scene resumes.

What should you eat in Phuket?

Southern Thai cooking is Thailand's boldest — hotter, sourer, turmeric-yellow, sea-driven — and Phuket's version carries Hokkien noodles and tin-era Chinese heritage on top. The island eats brilliantly from cart to starred table; order across the whole range.

PRU — the star

Phuket's only Michelin star, held with a Green Star, up the hill at Trisara Map (official site). "Plant, Raise, Understand": everything Thai-sourced, much of it grown at the restaurant's own Pru Jampa farm inland. The tasting menu reads as a tour of the country's larder; book well ahead and take the wine pairing's Thai entries on trust.

The local canon

Eighteen Bib Gourmand addresses fill the island's 2026 Michelin list, most of them old-town shophouses. The essential orders: moo hong (Hokkien pepper-pork), crab curry with rice noodles, oh tao (oyster omelette), and roti at a night market for dessert. A proper southern breakfast of dim sum and kopi in the old town costs pocket change and outranks most hotel buffets.

The tables with toes in sand

Beachfront dinners run from grilled-fish shacks to the beach clubs' full kitchens. The universal rule: whole fish, chosen from the ice, priced by weight, char-grilled with garlic. Confirm the kilo price with a nod; it is expected practice, not haggling.

The beach clubs

Bang Tao beach Map is the scene's home ground. Catch Beach Club Map is the established institution — white daybeds, a serious kitchen, the island's best-dressed sunset — and Café del Mar Map carries the Balearic end with headline DJ nights. Front-row beds go days ahead in high season; we hold them with dinner reservations attached.

Villa life, done fully

Phuket's ultra tier is really its private villa stock: staffed estates on Kamala's Millionaires' Mile and the northern headlands with chefs, boats and security. For a fortnight with three generations, a five-bedroom estate beats any hotel arithmetic — and our villa book covers the vetted tier.

Connectivity and the long stay

The island runs on fibre; villas and the top resorts hold video-call-grade bandwidth, and the airport's direct network makes month-long working stays trivially practical. Several of our Dubai clients now winter here entirely. Marinas on the east coast — Ao Po and Royal Phuket Map — berth the yachts that make Phang Nga a weekend habit rather than an excursion.

After dark

Skip the neon; the island's grown-up nights are beach-club terraces, hotel bars with rum programmes, and cigars on villa decks under monsoon-washed stars. The old town's cocktail rooms in restored shophouses are the connoisseur's late stop.

Final counsel: fly direct, land before noon, and be swimming by three. Phuket pairs naturally with Bangkok for a city-and-sea Thai fortnight, with Koh Samui across the peninsula, or with Singapore as the stopover that became a stay.
