Antalya Beyond Summer: The Turquoise Coast's Quiet Season

Clients tell us they want Antalya in July because July is when everyone else goes, and then they stand on the first tee at seven in the morning wondering why the round already feels like hard labour. The fix is not a different destination. It is a different fortnight.

Our full read on the Turquoise Coast's capital — Kaleici, the Roman ruins, the Belek estates, the whole arc of it — lives in our Antalya little black book. This piece is narrower and, for our money, better: the case for booking Antalya in the windows either side of summer, when the golf is sharper, the Aspendos stage comes alive, and a boat to Phaselis can be arranged on two days' notice rather than two weeks. The broader planning page sits at our Antalya destination guide, and everything named below is current as of October 2026.

When is Antalya's shoulder season?

Two windows: April into May, and late September running through October. Average highs climb from around 16.5°C in April to 20.9°C in May, then the autumn pass runs 25.8°C in September down to 21.5°C in October — against daytime highs that sit above 35°C through the middle of July and August. The difference is not marginal. It is the gap between a round of golf and a reason to stay by the pool.

What actually changes is the usability of the place. In peak summer, hotel occupancy along this stretch of coast runs above 95 percent and the heat compresses every activity into the first two hours of daylight. In the shoulder windows, the sea is still warm enough to swim, holding roughly 21°C in May and 27°C in September, but the air has let go of its grip. Mornings stretch later, afternoons stop being something to survive, and the golf carts come out at ten rather than six.

That green-fee row is the one worth sitting with. We will come back to it, because it says something true about who actually plays golf here and when.

Spring and autumn earn the shoulder-season label in different ways. April and May bring the Taurus mountains still carrying snow on their upper ridges while the coast below has already warmed through, a combination that does not last and does not repeat in autumn. September and October trade that contrast for something else entirely: a sea that has spent all summer heating up and has not yet cooled, holding at roughly 27°C in September, warmer than most Mediterranean beach towns manage even at their peak. Choose spring for the mountains-and-coast juxtaposition, autumn for the warm water and the festival calendar below. Neither is the compromise option; they are simply different trips wearing the same destination's name.

Tell us your dates and we will build the shoulder-season week around the golf, the festival calendar and the boat — before the good slots are gone.

Is Belek golf better outside summer?

Yes, and the pricing proves it. Belek's two headline courses charge more for a shoulder-season tee time than for one in August, because the golfers who actually travel for this coast come when the fairways are green and the air is breathable, not when the thermometer says otherwise.

The Montgomerie Maxx Royal

Maxx Royal Belek Golf Resort Map carries the resort's own Montgomerie-designed course, and its published 2026 rate card tells the whole shoulder-season story in one line: €220–250 from mid-February to the end of May, falling to €125–135 across July and August, then climbing back to €165–185 for the first three weeks of September. The course is not cheaper when it is better. It is cheaper when fewer people want to play it in 35°C heat at seven in the morning. Book a shoulder-season round and you are paying for exactly what you get: fairways at their greenest, no buggy restrictions, and tee sheets that still have room by mid-morning.

Carya Golf Club, Regnum Carya

A short drive away, Regnum Carya Map fields Carya Golf Club, a heathland-style Thomson Perrett & Lobb design across rolling dunes and pine that currently ranks first in Turkiye and 38th in Continental Europe on the Top 100 Golf Courses list, and was among the first fully floodlit 18-hole courses in Europe. The 553-room resort hosted the 2015 G20 leaders' summit, which tells you something about the standard of discretion on offer away from the course as well as on it. Floodlit golf matters more in the shoulder months than in summer: with the heat gone, a late-afternoon tee time that runs into the lit back nine is a pleasure rather than an endurance test.

The practical upshot for anyone weighing a golf trip against a beach fortnight: come in April, May or the first weeks of September and pay the premium rate willingly. The alternative is a July tee time that is cheap because nobody sane wants it.

The course itself backs up the price. Belek's fairways are reported at their greenest and best-maintained through the spring window, with buggy restrictions rare and the landscaping in bloom — a different course, in effect, from the one baked through a July afternoon. Book two to four weeks ahead for the March-to-May stretch all the same; the better morning slots move fast once golfers work out what we have just told you.

Where do you eat in the shoulder season?

Kaleici's one serious table reads differently once the courtyard stops being a furnace. Book Seraser for an outdoor seating in May or October and the room does what it was built to do.

Seraser Fine Dining Map occupies a 300-year-old Ottoman mansion in the walled old town, its menu running Mediterranean technique over Anatolian produce at a typical €45–75 per person before wine. The room has two faces: an interior of stone walls and velvet chairs, and a courtyard rebuilt as a small Mediterranean garden. In peak summer the courtyard is a trial by humidity after nine; in the shoulder months it is the better seat by a wide margin, cool enough by eight for a full tasting menu without anyone reaching for the table fan. Ask for the courtyard when you book, not the room — the distinction matters more here than at most restaurants we recommend.

The wider dining calendar follows the same logic as the golf: the estates' speciality kitchens run their full roster year-round, but service is unhurried once the July rush has passed, and a request for a chef's table or a late sitting is far more likely to land a yes in October than in August.

Order the day's fish and keep the meze course going longer than feels necessary; the kitchens at both Seraser and the Belek estates draw on produce that peaks either side of summer rather than during it — the coast's spring artichokes and citrus, the first of the autumn figs. A long shoulder-season lunch, taken outdoors, is a different meal from the same menu eaten indoors with the air conditioning fighting the heat. Raki with the meze, Turkish coffee taken slowly rather than as a punctuation mark, and a glass of tea on a rooftop afterwards with the evening still comfortable enough to sit through: this is the sequence that peak summer interrupts and the shoulder months restore.

Is there a reason to time a visit around the arts?

Yes, and it falls precisely in the window this piece is arguing for. The 33rd International Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival runs from 12 to 26 September 2026, staged inside the Roman theatre that has held audiences for roughly two thousand years.

The Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival Map, run by the Turkish State Opera and Ballet directorate since 1994, opened this year's programme on 12 September with Verdi's Attila, followed by the ballet Anna Karenina on the 15th, two performances of Carmina Burana on the 19th and 21st with around 250 performers on stage, and a close on the 25th and 26th with Spartacus. Performances begin at 9pm, once the stone has given up the day's heat and the acoustics — famously good enough that the theatre needs no amplification — carry clean to the back row. Any visitor who has stood in Aspendos at midday in August, squinting at a tour guide, owes it to themselves to come back after dark in September and watch the same stage do what it was actually built for.

Outside the festival window, Aspendos by day is still the better visit in the shoulder months: fewer coaches, softer light, and a theatre you can walk around rather than through.

Build the day around the evening performance rather than squeezing it in. Arrive in the late afternoon while the theatre is still open to daytime visitors, walk the stage and the vaulted passages behind it before the crowd gathers, then take a table nearby for dinner and let the 9pm start arrive on its own schedule. Tickets run through the state portal, dobgm.gov.tr, and the national ticketing platforms rather than through the hotels, so this is one booking our desk makes directly on a client's behalf well before travel, not something to leave for the concierge desk at check-in. The festival sells out its best seats inside Antalya first; by the time a visitor lands, the choice is often between a side view and nothing at all.

Where do you stay for the shoulder season?

The same three addresses that work in peak summer work here, with one difference: in April, May, September and October you are buying a villa category rather than fighting for one.

PropertyTierWhereShoulder-season edge
Hotel Mille KaleiciRefinedOld townTerrace evenings without the August heat
Regnum CaryaUltraBelekFloodlit golf, villa compound, easier booking window
Maxx Royal Belek Golf ResortUltraBelekVilla category available at shorter notice

Maxx Royal Belek sits on roughly 300 metres of private, Blue Flag-certified sand, with villa accommodation running from two- and three-bedroom Albatross villas through a four-bedroom Presidential villa and an Owner Villa with its own VIP cabana service. In August that villa inventory is committed months out. In the shoulder windows it is still bookable at three or four weeks' notice, which for a property of this standing is an unusual luxury in itself. Regnum Carya's 553-room estate, with its own villa compound set apart from the main house, offers the same relative ease, and its floodlit course means a round booked for five in the afternoon can run comfortably into the evening without anyone watching the light anxiously. For travellers who want Antalya rather than Belek, Hotel Mille Kaleici Map puts you inside the old town's walls, close enough to walk to Seraser and the harbour, with a garden that is actually usable in the evening rather than merely decorative.

The booking advice differs by property. At the Belek estates, ask the reservations desk for the shoulder-season villa inventory specifically rather than the standard room categories the website surfaces first; a villa with a plunge pool can sit at a similar rate to a high-category suite once the summer surcharge drops away, and the gap between the two experiences is considerable. At Hotel Mille, book the room with the terrace rather than the one with the view of someone else's terrace — the old town's charm is vertical as much as horizontal, and a shoulder-season evening spent on your own balcony over Kaleici's rooftops is worth the modest upgrade.

Festival tickets and the best villas at the Belek estates move together once the September dates are set. We hold both before the calendar fills.

Where is the shoulder-season insider layer?

Three things come easier once the crowds thin: a cigar after dinner without a wait for a table, a boat that can be chartered on short notice rather than weeks out, and a shopping avenue that stays pleasant to walk after dark because the air has cooled.

Cigars. The Ash Cigar Lounge Map at Regnum The Crown is a rooftop room overlooking the Mediterranean, open 4pm to midnight, 18 and over, smart casual, pouring premium spirits alongside a curated cigar selection. It is a small room by design, and in peak season a late table is a matter of luck. In the shoulder months the rooftop empties out enough that a last-minute booking after a Seraser dinner is a realistic plan rather than a hope.

The water. West of Antalya, the ancient harbour city of Phaselis Map has no road access at all — the only ways in are a long forest walk or a boat from Kemer marina, which is the whole point. Founded in 690 BC as a Lycian harbour town, it keeps a Roman theatre, an aqueduct and a colonnaded avenue whose harbour walls slope straight into the sea; most charters anchor two to three hours in the central bay, long enough to swim the length of the submerged foundations. Koray Yachting, TURSAB-registered and running daily gulet charter out of Kemer, is one of several legitimate operators working this stretch of coast. In July and August the better boats are booked out weeks ahead and the bays themselves crowd with day-trip traffic; in the shoulder windows a private half-day or full-day charter can usually still be arranged inside a week, with the water warm enough to swim comfortably through October.

Shopping, after dark. The Land of Legends Shopping Avenue Map in Belek, an open-air boulevard built around a Venice-style canal with gondolas running its length, stays open from 10am to midnight and costs nothing to enter — you pay only for the rides and the water park beyond it. In peak summer the avenue is a place to escape the heat; in the shoulder months, with the evening air closer to pleasant than oppressive, it becomes an actual destination for a post-dinner walk rather than an air-conditioned refuge.

None of this layer requires fighting for. That is the real argument for the shoulder season over the headline attractions: Antalya in April or October is not a destination you have to out-manoeuvre, the way a client might have to out-manoeuvre August in the South of France. The cigar table, the boat and the shopping avenue are simply easier to have exactly when you want them, which is a different kind of luxury from exclusivity, and in our experience the one clients come to value more once they have tried both.

Practical notes

Antalya's airport takes direct flights from Dubai in roughly four and a half to five hours on flydubai, SunExpress and Pegasus, with the Belek estates around thirty minutes from the kerb. Shoulder-season evenings in April and October run cooler than the daytime high suggests, particularly on the water or up at Tunektepe, so pack one layer you would not bother with in July.

Visa requirements turn on passport nationality rather than UAE residency. UAE nationals travel visa-free for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period; other nationalities should check e-Visa eligibility directly at evisa.gov.tr before booking, since holding a UAE residence visa does not by itself grant entry. The currency is the Turkish lira, though euros are accepted without fuss at the Belek estates. For a longer trip, our Cappadocia guide makes a natural second act, the internal flight running under ninety minutes, and travellers drawn to the gulet life should read our note on Bodrum's charter coast, of which Antalya's waters are the quieter, less-crowded cousin in these same months.

One booking order, for the record: hold the villa category first, the Seraser courtyard second, and the Phaselis charter third. In the shoulder season none of them is desperate, but all three are better secured before you land than decided from the lounger. If an Aspendos date falls inside your trip, move that to the top of the list instead; a festival ticket beats a dinner reservation every time.

Golfers and families chasing the snow-capped Taurus backdrop should lean toward April and May; anyone building a trip around Aspendos, warmer water or a late-year escape from a Dubai summer should hold out for September. Resist doing both in a single visit. The two windows pull in different directions, and a traveller who tries to compress them ends up with neither the mountain light of spring nor the festival nights of autumn, just a week in between that belongs to no particular season at all.
