The AlUla Little Black Book
AlUla is the rare destination that arrived at luxury before it arrived at crowds. The ancient oasis in Saudi Arabia's north-west — home to Hegra, the Nabataean necropolis that became the Kingdom's first UNESCO World Heritage Site — has quietly assembled a set of hotels, tables and private experiences that would flatter destinations with fifty years' head start. When clients ask us to arrange AlUla, the conversation is less about what to see than about how privately to see it.
What follows is the current working list from our desk — every entry verified this season, nothing included on reputation alone.
The Table: Dinner Above a Mirror
Maraya Social is the booking that defines the destination. Jason Atherton — one of Britain's most celebrated chefs and a Michelin star recipient — oversees this rooftop dining room atop Maraya, the concert hall in the Ashar Valley that holds the record as the world's largest mirrored building. The menu is contemporary British; the terrace view, canyon walls dissolving into reflection at dusk, is unrepeatable anywhere else on earth. Book the sunset seating and arrive early enough to watch the building disappear into the landscape. Within the resorts, Harrat, Banyan Tree's all-day dining room, layers local arts and crafts into a multi-sensory room, and the resort will also set a private destination dining table out in the valley itself — dinner alone among the sandstones.
Where to Stay: The Ashar Valley Duo
Two addresses divide the discerning traffic. Banyan Tree AlUla is the tented grande dame: pool villas beneath canvas canopies facing the Ashar sandstones, rising to the Dune Three Bedroom Pool Villa — 240 square metres with a ten-seater dining table and a secluded terrace pool. It is the choice for those who want polish with their wilderness. Our Habitas AlUla, a 96-villa retreat set deep in a box canyon of the same valley, is the quieter, more elemental counterpart — indoor-outdoor showers, king beds, and at the top of the range the Arabian Villas, its largest and most secluded category, with sweeping views over the valley floor. Both are a short drive from Maraya; neither feels near anything at all, which is precisely the point. Banyan Tree pairs its villas with a spa and rock pool carved against the canyon, morning yoga in the valley, and in-villa dining from nine to nine — reservations are taken directly by the resort's AlUla desk. Habitas keeps its footprint deliberately light: the base villas are compact and elemental at around forty-five square metres, which is precisely why the Arabian Villa is the category to insist upon if space matters to you. A third option, Caravan AlUla by Our Habitas, offers the same valley in a more playful key — worth knowing about for family parties taking multiple accommodations, though the two flagships remain the recommendation for couples.
Hegra, Privately
The tombs of Hegra should never be seen from a coach. Experience AlUla's Hegra Premium Tour takes the necropolis by private premium 4x4 with your own guide — the difference between visiting a monument and being introduced to one. For something with more romance, private vintage Land Rover tours of Hegra run at golden hour, open-topped, in restored trucks that suit the landscape better than anything modern could. Both are small-capacity and book out in the cooler months; this is the single arrangement to confirm before flights.
The Air: Balloons and Rotors
AlUla from above is a different destination again. Sunrise hot-air-balloon flights over Hegra drift across the rock formations and tomb façades in the first light — operators fly from AlUla with veteran captains, some with two decades in the basket, and the early call is repaid within minutes of lift-off. Flights are weather-dependent and confirmed the evening before, so build a spare morning into the plan. Helicopter tours over the oasis, the old town and the sandstone canyons offer the faster, more private alternative, and charter well for couples who prefer the doors-on comfort of rotor flight to the ceremony of a balloon. Either way, fly first, then tour — the aerial grammar of the place makes everything on the ground legible.
The Practical Close
AlUla is a winter destination in the best sense: the season runs on the cooler months, the valley empties in high summer, and the best villas and private Hegra slots are claimed well ahead. Fly into AlUla's own airport, let the resort handle the transfer, and hold three nights minimum — one for Maraya Social, one for Hegra at golden hour, one for the balloon. Those routing through the Gulf can pair it naturally with Abu Dhabi on the way in or out. Done in that order, AlUla is the most composed new luxury destination in the region — and for a few seasons yet, you will largely have it to yourself. One final note on manner: this is a heritage site before it is a resort destination, and the guides — many of them AlUla locals trained as rawis, storytellers — are the best part of every private tour. Ask for one by name on a return visit; they will remember you.
